The Joint Committee between Egypt and Greece

Historical Background

Cooperation between both countries takes place within the framework of the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement signed on 24 February 1986 during the Greek Foreign Minister’s visit to Egypt.  Pursuant to Article 8 of the Agreement, a Ministerial Joint Committee for economic and technical cooperation was established to execute the Agreement and seek the appropriate means of enhancing economic, scientific and technical cooperation between both countries.

Sessions Held

Seven Sessions of the Joint Committee were held in Athens and Cairo alternately in 1987, 1992, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2006 and 2010 for discussing bilateral relations between both countries. 

Important Recommendations /Agreements Signed at the Last Session:

The Seventh Session of the Joint Committee for Economic and Technical Cooperation was held on 22 & 23 November 2010 in the Greek Capital, Athens.  At the Joint Committee meetings, agreements reached in previous sessions were reviewed and pending issues were discussed and settled. Within this context, it was decided to set up a mechanism for following up on the execution of cooperation protocols and the main contacts from both countries were determined, namely MOIC in Egypt and the Foreign Ministry in Greece.  Both sides also agreed to re-activate the Egyptian Greek Business Council and to call for its convention within two months from that date.  They decided to focus on vital fields of joint interest, where energy, renewable and clean energy, tourism, construction, telecommunications and transport were on top of the list. 
The meetings concluded with signing three MOU’s between both countries:
MOU on Cooperation between the Egyptian Federation for Construction and Building Contractors (EFCBC) and the Association of Greek Contracting Companies (SATE) concerning joint projects between both countries and other countries in Africa and the Middle East. 
MOU between the Agricultural Research Center in Egypt and its corresponding center in Greece.
MOU on Scientific Cooperation in the field of agriculture and the environment. 
Further, The final draft of an MOU on cooperation between the Egyptian Investment Authority and the Greek Investment Authority was reached, as well as one on cooperation between Alexandria Port and Piraeus and Alexandropolis Ports in Greece, to be signed by the competent ministers.
